    George Washington University: Madison Gore

Madison Gore spent part of her summer in George Washington University’s Pre-College Program.

Why did you choose to participate in a summer program?

Choosing what to do for the summer before entering my senior year was a difficult decision. I wanted to go away from home, so that way by the time I would enter college, I would be used to being away, and would gain a sense of independence.

How did you decide which program or camp was right for you?

I was looking for a program that had strong academics, but also would allow me to have fun. The GW Pre-College Program gave me this balance, and it was the best decision I could have made.

What was a typical day in your summer program or at camp?

During this six-week program, I lived in the dorms at George Washington University among other high school students across the globe. Half of the week I would have class, where I would sit with other college students and learn about international relations. This experience has prepared me for college tremendously, because now I know how to study and take notes for my classes- a skill I did not have before this program. When I did not have class, I would spend my days traveling across Washington, D.C. I would go to the different monuments, museums, and read at the Georgetown waterfront. This balance of academics, but also independence and fun, was truly great, and is exactly what my college life is like now.

What was the most memorable moment of your summer?

Practically every night I would sit in the common room with the residential advisors and my friends and we would watch TV and talk about life. This was the best part of the program for me because I got to get very close with a great group of people. I now can say I have friends who are from North Carolina, a reservation in Montana, and even from China. Overall this program has changed my life for the better, and I would not be the person I am today without it. From the influential people I met, the knowledge I gained, and the memories I made, going on this program was the best decision I could have made.

What advice do you have for teens looking at summer programs or campus?

If I were to give any advice to someone who was choosing to go away for the summer, I would say find the program or camp that will make you not only the happiest but will allow you to grow as a person. Going away can be a scary thing, but if you give it a chance, it is an amazing experience that I strongly recommend to everyone.
