    Music Abbey Meysenburg

Abbey Meysenburg studied music management at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.

How did you discover your passion for Music Management?

I’ve been writing and performing music for a little over five years, but I often found myself just as enthralled with the process of planning gigs, booking artists, and reviewing contracts as I was with performing. When I found out about the Management of Music, Entertainment, Theatre and Events course at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) at a NACAC PVA fair, I was very happy to find a program that combined all my interests.

What’s your favorite part about creating?

My favorite part of creating is that it is a tangible way to bring to life what I am feeling, thinking or dreaming about. I have experienced the emotional impact that art can provide on numerous occasions, and I greatly enjoy helping to create that experience for other people.

Why did you pick this particular university?

I did not originally intend to study outside of the United States, but once I was introduced to LIPA, it seemed to be the very best option. I was intrigued by the small class sizes, the professional experience of the faculty, and the opportunity to start from scratch in a new community. Since moving here, there have been so many benefits I hadn’t even considered! For example, in order to practice what I learn in the classroom, I must attend and work at many concerts, many of them in bars. If I was still in the States, I wouldn’t legally be allowed in the venues! Fortunately, in the UK the minimum age is 18, not 21.

How do you think this program will help with what you want to do next?

So much of my course is taught through practical application. I feel that when I enter the workforce, I will have concrete, real-life experiences to draw knowledge from, not just the information I have received through PowerPoints and essays. In addition to our regular faculty, we have guests and speakers, who are currently working in the industry, come in on a regular basis, so the knowledge we are gaining is incredibly up to date. I also love attending a school that is filled with creative people: from actors, dancers, musicians to sound technicians, designers and filmmakers. We will all enter the industry at the same time and will hopefully be able to help each other find jobs!

Where do you imagine yourself in 10 years?

In ten years, I hope to direct or own a collaborative, community-based venue and art space. I’ve really enjoyed living, studying and practicing abroad, although I do miss aspects of life in America, so I’m quite excited to see where in the world I end up!
