Seton Hill University student Halie Torris

Halie Torris is an art-graphic design major at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pa.

How did you discover your passion for art/graphic design?

I discovered my passion for art when I was growing up. I don’t want to sound like a cliché, but I’d always doodle in class and I’d find myself drawing in my free time. I began painting and taking art classes in middle school and it wasn’t until high school that I started taking it seriously. My interest in design began when I explored the digital side and how I could apply my creativity there.

What’s your favorite part about creating?

My favorite part is the process itself: coming up with the idea and then seeing it progress to the final painting or design mock-up. Whether it’s fine art or digital design, the process for me is the same.

What’s the hardest part for you about creating?

The hardest part is beginning the process. It’s hard to start because there can be many ideas in your mind and you have to simplify and begin anew.

Why did you pick Seton Hill?

I picked Seton Hill not only for the art program, but to play basketball as well. I was recruited to come here and it worked out for me both in the classroom and on the court.

What has been your favorite part of the art program at Seton Hill?

My favorite part has not only been learning in an amazing facility like the new arts building, but also meeting and working with my peers and the faculty here. I’ve developed as a designer outside of the classroom as well by listening to my peers and their feedback regarding my work.

How do you think this program will help in what you want to do next?

It has transformed me from a girl who liked to paint and was interested in design into someone who is confident in her abilities as an artist and has found her own voice in design. This program has shaped the way that I think and will propel me forward into the next steps of my career. It has also opened my eyes to entrepreneurship and the excitement of owning my own business. I worked with my business partner (Fitzgerald Robertson) and developed Gray Hemlock, an online marketplace for affordable, fair trade jewelry, all under $30. I created the branding for the company and gained first-hand experience on the ups and downs of the journey and gaining value from opportunities.

Where do you imagine yourself in 10 years?

I imagine myself not only happy in my career, but also in my personal life. I aspire to continue my creative path with an open mind and to constantly learn and develop new ideas along the way.
