It’s May. And soon enough it will be June, then the last day of school, and then… what?

If studying and sports and community service have taken up so much of your attention that you haven’t given a thought to summer yet, you needn’t worry. Yes, you’ve missed the deadlines for some of the more competitive summer programs, and a few others may be close to selling out.

But if you start researching and applying now, there are still lots of great options for summer programs that can take you into depths of the human brain, the details of architectural design, or, quite literally, to the top of a mountain.

Feeling the wanderlust?

There’s nothing wrong with getting a job or doing some volunteer work at home this summer. But if you are feeling the itch to travel, there are plenty of programs that will let you learn new languages or do service trips to destinations from Argentina to Vietnam (and some a little closer to home).

• CIEE: This leading study abroad company offers three- and four-week summer programs for high school students that let participants learn Spanish in Seville, practice diplomacy in Moscow, or study wildlife conservation in Botswana. But get moving — some programs are already sold out.
• Rustic Pathways: With more than 100 summer programs for high school students, Rustic Pathways can satisfy your urge for adventure whether you are looking to improve educational access in Cambodia or hike and camp along the California coast.
• Travel for Teens: Some programs are already full, but there are plenty of adventures still available. Consider a 13-day trip exploring all corners of Iceland or 10 days perfecting your photography skills in Italy.

The college experience

Some of the country’s best schools offer summer programs that allow students to delve into an area of interest while getting a taste of campus life.

• Duke Summer Programs: Course offerings range from neuroscience and cryptology to creative writing and video production -- and many programs still have room.
• Emory Pre-College Program: Emory’s two-week non-credit courses — on subjects including sports medicine, economics, and feminist theory — are still accepting applications. But several classes are already full, so act fast.

Learn a valuable skill

The school year gets so busy it can be hard to find time to learn that new coding language or connect with yourself. These summer programs are here to solve that problem.

• Inward Bound Mindfulness Education: Mindfulness is valuable to help combat anxiety and increase your physical and mental well-being. Immerse yourself in the practice with a six-day retreat that includes meditation, yoga, and workshops. Offered at locations across the country.
• iD Tech: With STEM camps on dozens of college campuses, iD Tech trains students in coding, artificial intelligence, game development, video production, and other skills.
• Boston Architectural College Summer Academy: Aspiring architects and industrial designers can get hands-on experience with some of the basic techniques and technologies they will need, including using laser cutters, 3-D design and printing, and working with virtual reality software.
