Talkington College of Visual and Performing Arts: Matthew Cubillos
Posted June 17, 2018, 5:00 pm byMatthew Cubillos is studying acting at Talkington College of Visual and Performing Arts at Texas Tech.
How did you discover your passion for acting?
I took a theater class during my sophomore year in high school, just hoping to have fun. A couple of weeks into the class, my theater teacher approached me and suggested that I try out for the lead in a play. I got the role. The theater bug had bitten me, and I knew I wanted to pursue a career in acting.
What’s your favorite part about performing?
I truly love the craft and process of acting. I love being immersed in a character's life and the collaborative effort it takes to put a production together. I enjoy being part of a team working to create something unique and something that others can enjoy.
What’s the hardest part for you about performing?
The hardest part is accepting that you did not get a part in a play. I have learned not to take it personally and that sometimes I’m not what the director is looking for. The important thing is to not give up and just keep auditioning.
Why did you pick Texas Tech?
During my senior year in high school I attended the Texas Thespian Festival in Dallas, Texas, where I auditioned for several universities including Texas Tech. I visited the campus the following spring and was impressed by the theater program and the faculty. An added plus was that I would remain in Texas.
What has been your favorite experience at this college?
I love the fact that Texas Tech offers its students opportunities that very few universities provide. I have participated in the WildWind Performance Lab where we spent the month of June experimenting with theater processes guided by invited guests. Amazing playwrights also worked with us to develop their plays. I spent two incredible weeks immersed in The Marfa Intensives, a creative theater experience. It gave me the opportunity to be involved in a collaborative creation from beginning to end.
How do you think this program will help in what you want to do next?
Upon completion of my BFA in Acting, I will have the intensive training that will help in my ultimate goal to become a professional actor on stage. The program has allowed me to expand my acting skills while also giving me the unique and valuable feedback of my peers and instructors. I’ve learned to focus on the training that I need to improve my own work.
Where do you imagine yourself in 10 years?
Acting is something that has stirred a passion in me and it is something I know I want to continue doing the rest of my life. In 10 years, I hope to be acting on Broadway and acting in regional theaters in major cities across the United States.
