Delphine Chang is studying dance at the University of Arizona College of Fine Arts.

How did you discover your passion for dance?

Dance plays a significant role in many cultures. I was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, surrounded and inspired by the city’s magnetic energy and vibrant culture. I was mesmerized by the dancing in traditional festivals, which ultimately spurred my love for this art form.

What’s your favorite part about performing?

I love how a performance can mean something different to everyone. The presence of ambiguity in many creations is what excites and inspires me. That said, I have always admired how dance can serve as a universal form of communication. Regardless of personal meaning, dance has the power to bring people together no matter their background.

What’s the hardest part for you about performing?

Personally, it’s finding the confidence to believe in your own bliss and verve. It’s easy to get absorbed in the aesthetic of dance, especially when the industry is based on your external performance. I think it’s often difficult to focus on one’s internal self so that your external self has a chance to shine.

Why did you pick this particular college?

I chose the University of Arizona College of Fine Arts because you can utilize the resources that a large university offers, while still receiving individual attention that is found within a conservatory program. Because of the extensive list of classes offered, I never worry about fitting classes into my busy schedule. The connections here make it possible to receive grants, scholarships, internships, jobs and more, through stimulating, enriching, and creative experiences. The amount of student engagement and collaboration within various colleges is inspiring and the result never waivers from extraordinary. The best part about a university with a conservatory-like program is you have options and countless opportunities to tailor your education to exactly what you want.

How do you think this program will help in what you want to do next?

Today, it is crucial to be versatile in all areas of dance. This university has allowed me to achieve this and continues to facilitate my growth in becoming a well-rounded and educated artist. Not only has it supported me in my artistic endeavors, it has set me up well for life in general and allows me to cater to all my interests. For example, they didn’t offer a specific minor I was looking for. However, I worked with an advisor to create an Arts Management minor for myself. That’s what makes this program so unique.

Where do you imagine yourself in 10 years?

I would love to be traveling and touring with a professional dance company in 10 years. If I stay in the artistic field and continue to follow my bliss and help others find theirs, I will be gratified.
