Claire Cisco studied fashion merchandising at Wayne State University.

How did you discover your passion for fashion merchandising?

I have always loved fashion and styling; however, I knew I did not want to be a fashion designer, so it was tricky to figure out what I could do in fashion. When I was looking into colleges, I saw fashion merchandising as an option at Wayne State, and I knew that was meant for me. I am a very creative person, but I also enjoy analytics, analyzing data, and the "why" behind something to connect the dots and create a story. Fashion Merchandising preps you to flex those muscles to be able to become a merchant, buyer, planner, etc. The opportunities are endless with what you can do with fashion merchandising!

What’s your favorite part about creating?

My favorite thing about fashion, of course, is working in the fashion and retail industry! Fashion is quick changing and you have to be willing to adapt and adjust so you don't get lost in the dust. I've noticed that people working in fashion as well are quick-thinkers and able to turn on that creative light to solve a problem. Fashion Merchandising means many different things depending on where you are employed, but it comes down to being able to strategize and execute creative merchandising decisions as well as analytical data.

Why did you pick this particular college?

Wayne State is an affordable, but competitive school! Our fashion program is smaller than others, but we are able to take part in so many presentations and projects that set us up for success. Wayne State also offers so many scholarships, some that are specific to your area of study, which I have been lucky to have been awarded. Wayne State really supports their student's success in so many ways!

What has been your favorite part of this college?

The various opportunities that have been made possible by going to Wayne State is phenomenal. Our fashion program is smaller than other schools and that gives you the opportunity to form really close relationships with your professors and classmates. These connections made with my professors are why I have been able to be so successful, because they have seen the hard work you put in at school and are willing to recommend you to companies and organizations for internships or jobs. That is actually how I got my first internship, through a professor recommending me!
