West Chester University: Blair Kidd

Blair Kidd is studying violin and music education at West Chester University in Pennsylvania.

How did you discover your passion for music?

I discovered my passion for music when I was in middle school. I realized how large of an impact music made on me personally. All things may be going wrong in my life, but when I walked into my music class, I forgot all about the negativity around me. That passion grew when I started to learn about music in a different light and find my own style. The different genres of music in particular is what sparked my interest. I chose the violin because of a performance that I attended at an early age. It was a solo performance by a Latin style violinist. After that experience, anything was possible through music. From that moment on I wanted to follow in her footsteps and provide that level of happiness and intrigue for others as she made did for me.

What’s your favorite part about performing?

My favorite part about performing is sharing what I’ve worked so hard on and interacting with the audience and fellow players. I feel the best performances occur when the everyone including the audience is involved.

What’s the hardest part for you about performing?

The hardest part about performing is staying focused and exemplifying everything on stage that you have practiced in a practice room or in your lesson. While performing, focus plays a huge part. No performance is perfect, but if your focus breaks, your performance can fall of track. I feel that a combination of focus, preparation, and enjoying yourself creates a good performance experience.

Why did you pick this college?

I chose West Chester University because of the unity and dedicated attitudes of the professors, staff, and students. I believe the only way to succeed is to be challenged and encouraged, and West Chester University provides both of these keys. A lot of students, like myself, appreciate these challenges from the university because once graduation is over, the tools learned at school prepare you for life’s obstacles. Here at West Chester, professors push you to be the best student and professional you can be.

What has been your favorite part of this program/college?

My favorite part about attending West Chester University is the dedication provided by my fellow students, faculty, and staff. The university is located in a town where you can always find something new to do. It also provides the opportunity for West Chester University students to become more involved in the community. West Chester University students and faculty are always willing to help and that always makes me feel welcomed.

How do you think this program will help in what you want to do next?

West Chester University has taught me to network and exist in a social setting with a diverse population. As I’m studying to become an educator I feel one of the most important characteristics to have is understanding diversity.

Where do you imagine yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years I see myself as a coordinator/conductor of one of the first orchestras or string ensembles at a historically black college or university.
