The Young Americans College of Performing Arts: Jonah Buckels

Jonah Buckels studies voice at The Young Americans College of Performing Arts in Corona, CA.

How did you discover your passion for performing?

I grew up a "performer.” At every family event when I was young, my siblings, cousins and I would usually put on little performance for our parents and grandparents. Performing always meant family to me as I moved on to theater in junior high and high school. But it wasn't until my junior year when I found my passion for the arts. I was an avid baseball player and theater was always No. 2. But when my theater director gave me the lead in “Into the Woods,” and my baseball coach wouldn't invest time into me, performing went right up to number one.

What’s your favorite part about performing?

I love telling a story and delivering a message to an audience. Every performance is a chance to impact somebody's day or life.

What’s the hardest part for you about performing?

The most difficult part of performing for me is making each and every performance fresh for every new audience. It takes a lot of discipline and perseverance to be consistent enough to keep the magic of the art alive and feeling new every single day.

Why did you pick The Young Americans College of the Performing Arts?

I chose YACPA because I wanted a unique experience that not many people get to be a part of. Traveling the world, performing, and teaching has taught me more than a traditional classroom.

What has been your favorite part of this program/college?

I have made the best of friends in this college and I have made memories that I will cherish the rest of my life. The people here at The Young Americans are the best.

How do you think YACPA will help in what you want to do next?

The Young Americans has helped me grow is every aspect of my life. On an educational level, I am equipped to pursue a bachelor’s degree. I've been able to hone my craft as a performer and have grown beyond what I could ever hope for. Through this program I have made so many connections. I can't wait to see what the future holds!
