SCI-Arc is a center of innovation and one of the nation's few independent architecture schools. The Institute is dedicated to educating architects who will imagine and shape the future. SCI-Arc provides students with a uniquely inspiring environment with the vibrant atmosphere of its studios.
Located in a quarter-mile long freight deposit in the artist's district in the heart of Los Angeles, SCI-Arc is an integral part of the emerging cultural hub of a city with a tradition of architectural experimentation. The 2013 America's Best Architecture Schools survey from DesignIntelligence ranks SCI-Arc as the #1 graduate and undergraduate architecture program in the Western US, with national rankings placing it as the #2 undergraduate and #6 graduate program overall. Based on the architecture skills assessment survey, SCI-Arc is ranked #1 in computer applications, construction methods & materials, and cross-disciplinary teamwork, #2 in design, #3 in analysis & planning, and #4 in research & theory, and sustainable design practices & principles.
Southern California Institute of Architecture offers students a unique experience as they pursue undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate degrees. Our approximately 500 students and 80 faculty members - most of whom are practicing architects - work together to re-think assumptions, create, explore, and test the limits of architecture. SCI-Arc's 5 year undergraduate program for the B. Arch (Bachelor of Architecture) degree integrates the development of knowledge of a wide range of conceptual and practical skills. Emphasis is placed on the development of the individual student's personal growth, self reflection, and knowledge of architectural design issues, including theoretical constructs and advancements in building technology.
SCI-Arc's graduate studies foster the institute's open-ended spirit of inquiry, responding to shifts in society, technology, and culture with a constantly evolving learning environment. SCI-Arc offers four graduate study options: two Master of Architecture degrees (M.Arch 1 and M.Arch 2) and two post-professional Master of Design Research degrees (M.DesR) in City Design, Planning & Policy, and in Emerging Systems, Technologies & Media.
