    Overview

Southern Maine Community College empowers students to respond to a changing world and enhances economic and cultural development in Southern Maine by providing a variety of educational opportunities and partnerships.

For over 60 years, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) has had a rich history of educating and preparing Maine people for jobs vital to Maines economic prosperity. In the last decade, the College has successfully transitioned into a high quality, comprehensive community college. SMCC has literally changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of students. With more than 45 degree and certificate programs and serving nearly 7,500 students, SMCC is not only the largest, oldest and most diverse institutions of the Maine Community College System, it is also the fastest growing community college in New England.

SMCC offers programs at the most affordable tuition in New England including business, health, education, the arts, trades, and the natural and social sciences that prepare students to begin an exciting career immediately upon graduation or allow them to continue their education at a four-year college or university. Most credits earned at SMCC transfer to colleges and universities across the country. SMCC is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

SMCC is committed to helping students succeed, and for many students who are balancing school, with jobs and often children, even affordable tuition can be challenging. Nearly $60,000 in scholarship funds were granted to students this year through the generous support of donors. The average scholarship provides students with $500 for each semester representing nearly 40 percent of the average students annual tuition, which is $2,700. It often makes the difference of whether or not a student succeeds and is able to complete their college degree.

SMCC graduates have transferred to four-year institutions such as the University of Maine, University of Southern Maine, Bates College, Smith College, Mt. Holyoke College, St. Josephs College, George Washington University, Tufts University, Wheelock College and many more. Approximately 44% of students continue on to a four-year college or university after graduation.
