The Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts (TCVPA) at Texas Tech University (TTU) is comprised of the School of Art, the School of Music, and the School of Theatre and Dance. Please visit the College website or the websites of the individual Schools for information about applying for admission.

About us: The TCVPA boasts a world-class faculty of 133, a diverse student body from around the world, and a 9:1 student/faculty ratio. It is the only Texas university program that is nationally accredited in all four arts. Graduates of the College have performed on the greatest stages; won Pulitzer, Grammy, Tony, and ADDY awards; and taught at prestigious universities around the world. The College places 100% of the music education and arts education majors who choose to enter the teaching profession. Come study where Susan Graham (international opera star), Hudson Hickman (Emmy-Award-winning producer), and DJ Stout (founding partner of Pentagram) all honed their craft!

Finances: Because of its reasonable tuition and low cost of living, TTU ranks in the top 100 of Kiplinger’s Best Values in Colleges. Non-resident undergraduate students qualify for in-state tuition (or discounted tuition) if they live in New Mexico or Oklahoma counties bordering Texas or if they receive a $1000 competitive scholarship. Read more about TTU Merit Scholarships at www.depts.ttu.edu/scholarships/incFreshman.php. Contact the individual Schools for information about scholarships in art, music, theatre, and dance.

Awards: TTU is one of only 115 universities in the U.S. to achieve Carnegie Tier One status. In Fall 2017, it became only the 10th Carnegie Tier One university to achieve Hispanic-Serving Institute (HSI) status. It is also one of the Top 10 Colleges in the U.S. for Veterans. The campus, largely in a Spanish Renaissance architectural style, features a collection of public art that is among the ten best in the U.S.

Student Life:The TCVPA can be your home away from home. We're a close-knit creative community with all the advantages and resources of a world-class public university. The Fine Arts Learning Community provides a unique living environment for arts majors. Over 800 public events are produced each year, most of them free to the public. With over 35 student organizations, including the 400+ Goin’ Band from Raiderland and the Mariachi Los Matadores, there are performing and creative opportunities for everyone. TCVPA students can also study abroad at programs in Seville, Prague, China, and Italy.

Unique Interdisciplinary Degree: The College also offers the Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts Studies, a unique interdisciplinary degree for students who wish to study multiple fields in equivalent depth. The student selects three concentration areas, two of which must be in the TCVPA.

TCVPA Honors College students working toward a Bachelor’s degree may gain early admission to the TTU School of Law through the “3+3” Early Admission Joint Program.

    Testimonials(8)

    • Love the community, love the old building, love seeing the success of people who practice really late and work hard, love the faculty, love everything!

      - Mia Zamora, Double major in Music and Math - August 11, 2017
    • Individual instruction is of an exceptional quality. Professors go out of their way to assist students with projects, help them refine ideas, and review difficult concepts.

      - Katharine Scherff, PhD in Fine Arts - August 10, 2017
    • At the School of Art, interdisciplinary collaboration and exploration of processes outside your program of emphasis are encouraged.

      - Ashley Busby, MFA Painting - August 10, 2017
    • The small class sizes foster a sense of community with classmates and more one-on-one time with professors. I love having a unique degree that embraces creativity.

      - Maria Alvarado, BFA Graphic Design - August 10, 2017
    • The Texas Tech School of Music has been my home away from home, so much so that I practically sleep in the practice rooms. I feel more prepared to face the world as a music educator with each passing day, thanks to my professors, the opportunities provided by the university, the quality of the program, and the amount of real-world experience I get as a student.

      - Devon Curtis, BM in Music Education - August 10, 2017
    • In the School of Theatre and Dance, you are educated in more than just academics, theories, and concepts; you learn life lessons from professors who care about you as a human being. This supportive environment and community has allowed me to thrive and grow as an artist in so many ways. Truly, there is no other place that I would want to be.

      - Juliet Wallace, BFA Dance - August 10, 2017
    • Texas Tech University has brought out the best in me. Over the past three years, I have been admitted into the Meadowmount, Brevard, and Eastern Music Festivals; attended the Round Top Music Festival; performed in the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra; won the Texas Tech University String Concerto Competition; and become a national finalist in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) chamber competition. All of this was possible only because of how much my professors cared to push me. This university has given and will continue to give me the necessary knowledge and wisdom to perform in the real world. They have taught me how to perform under pressure through exposure. They have prepared me to be ready for very important auditions for graduate school and professional orchestras. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Texas Tech, and it has been an honor to be taught by the outstanding professors there.

      - Justus Ross, BM in Violin Performance - August 10, 2017
    • The faculty here are knowledgeable professionals in their particular fields. They are very supportive and always encourage us to do our best and exceed our own expectations. Their connections with other professionals in the industry, especially Tech alumni, provide us with a variety of internship opportunities when it comes to exploring our career paths. I have accomplished so much with the help from my professors. The projects I created during my time in the graphic design program helped me win multiple local ADDYs (American Advertising Award). In my last semester at Tech, my entry made it past the district level and won a silver award at national level. These awards definitely aided me in my job search. I did not realize how relevant the program curriculum was to real world practice until I started my first job. I fit right in at my current position with Pentagram because the program had prepared me to do very similar tasks while in school.

      - Mystie Do, BGA in Graphic Design - August 10, 2017
