    Overview

UArts is advancing human creativity with a unique environment that encourages risk-taking and exploration. Visual artists, dancers, designers, actors, writers, filmmakers and musicians collaborate and find their creative paths in their desired areas of study.

University of the Arts is one of the only arts schools in the U.S. that make it possible to work and collaborate across traditional boundaries. More than 20 minors are open to all students, so animators can study guitar, product designers can minor in photography, creative writers can take classes in illustration.

UArts believes creativity is the most essential skill for success in today’s society and has educated generations of groundbreaking artists, performers, designers and creative leaders for 145 years.

After being granted university status in 1987, University of the Arts became the largest institution of its kind in the nation, offering programs in design, fine arts, media arts, music, dance, theater and writing. UArts offers more than 20 undergraduate arts majors, 15 graduate programs and the nation’s first PhD program in Creativity.

We are a supportive community committed to individual and artistic integrity and inclusion. We promote and respect self-expression, a wide range of ideas and diversity in all its forms. With a focus on excellence, we inspire, challenge and support the unconventional thinkers, dreamers and doers who are passionate about using their creative works to impact society.

Life on the Avenue of the Arts: Imagine living less than one block away from the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, home to the world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra and the Philadelphia Ballet. Consider the possibility of an impromptu weekday visit to the sculpture garden at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. As a UArts student, you’ll benefit from direct access to more than 20 professional concert halls, museums, jazz clubs, music clubs and theaters—all within a short walk from campus.

Designated as one of the best cities in the U.S. for creatives, Philadelphia is the ideal location for inquisitive students who desire to explore all that the city has to offer. Whether you prefer to sip and people-watch at a sidewalk café or relax on a shady bench in nearby Rittenhouse Square, you’ll find yourself at home. Named “the coolest city in America” by Huffington Post, Philly offers up-and-coming artists the best of both worlds: affordability and access to world-class museums, theaters and galleries.
