Raleigh Expedition is an international volunteering program open to all and engaging young people from around the world.
We believe young people have the power to change the world. So we run overseas volunteering programs to ignite young people’s passion for change and equip them with the skills, networks and confidence to become youth leaders.
Our Raleigh Expedition program encompasses a variety of up to three different projects and experiences, that combined give our volunteers the opportunity to create change in themselves as well as in the environments and communities where we work.
Young people who volunteer with us will have the chance to build their skills on an adventure leadership trek, create real lasting change working together with communities on the community project and combat one of the biggest challenges facing us today through the environmental project.
Raleigh Expedition is one of the first UK programs to be accredited by the Gap Year Association (GYA) and recognized by TeenLife as a Top 15 Most Popular Gap Program in 2020.
Change Starts Here
Join over 55,000 people from over 100 countries and become part of a global community dedicated to supporting youth-led action.
Our projects take place three times a year in Costa Rica & Nepal, and last either 4, 5, 6, 7 or 10 weeks – so you can choose one that fits in with your plans.
During the Expedition, students will participate in up to three different project phases:
We work in partnership with communities to identify where change is needed most and how we can create lasting positive impact. Although you may only be based in a community for a few weeks, you will be part of a wider long-term effort helping to strengthen worldwide communities, increase education opportunities or improve access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene.
We recognise that young peoplewill not stand-by whilst the natural world is depleted, so we create opportunities to combat the global challenges we all face.
Our environmental projects make gradual steps toward long term impact. Even if you join us for just a few weeks, you will be contributing to the global effort needed to help preserve the world's natural environment.
Adventure Leadership Trek
Our Adventure Leadership Treks are an essential part of Expeditions - showing that you can build skills and create change in you, in addition to our community and environmental projects.
You will build core skills, resilience and determination to drive change, trekking through remote areas tourists don’t normally get access to.
To give you peace of mind...

My experience with Raleigh was truly life changing. It made me challenge myself and achieve things that I did not think I would be able to. I took part as a volunteer manager and felt that the training and support from the in country staff was excellent. The safety standards were exceptional with a strong emphasis on preventing accidents but also ensuring that we were confident in what to do in the event of an emergency and having had to put these into effect I felt completely able to deal with the situation. We got to work in some of the most outstanding scenery in Costa Rica and meet some amazing members of the community. The experience has truly changed my outlook and made me want to be a more active citizen and carrying out further volunteer work is now an integral part of my life.- Chloe - May 19, 2017
For our project we were based in a rural village which took 2 hours from the nearest road to walk there - it was one of the most remote places I have been and staying with local families in their homes was truly amazing. Despite the fact that we didn't share a common language we formed a close bond with our family as we got by on a mixture of Nepali and English words and a large amount of miming! Being able to be part of the water and sanitation project which Raleigh was carrying out there was such a privilege. The village had limited access to water and the construction of a new water system meant that they had a more reliable source of water. The construction of new tap stands and toilets also meant better access to facilities in the village.- Sally - July 10, 2019
