    Overview

The German International School Washington D.C. (GISW) is a private, co-educational institution with more than 500 students in preschool through 12th grade

Our Oberstufe (High School) consists of grades 10 -12. Currently, 87 students visit the Oberstufe. In addition to the German graduation exam (Abitur), our students can obtain a Maryland High School Diploma.

Each grade is split in two classes, with each having their own home classroom where most of the main subjects are taught. For the Second and Third Foreign Language, as well as Sciences, Art and Music ,students are taught in different formations outside their home room. The 10th grade represents the introductory phase to the Oberstufe, where two out of the three Natural Sciences and two Foreign Language courses are mandatory. At the beginning of the 10th grade, students can choose between Physics or Spanish as a Third Language. In the 11th and 12th grade, students choose four classes from the combined courses of Natural Sciences and Foreign Languages, whereby one course from each fieldis mandatory.
