    Overview

The Putney School is a progressive boarding and day school that values experiential education. Our students learn by doing rather than being told, developing confidence, leadership skills and a deeper understanding of their potential. We are a community of people who think for themselves, invent, design, experiment, build, and chase down new ideas.

Putney students are encouraged to challenge themselves academically, to actively participate in and appreciate the arts, to engage in vigorous athletics, and to develop a social consciousness and world view that will provide the foundation for life-long moral and intellectual growth.

We believe teenagers are capable and trustworthy, and students play an active role in the Putney community. They sit on governing bodies such as the board of trustees, and run the entire work program — milking the cows, serving food in the kitchen, keeping classrooms clean, and overseeing the daily functioning of campus life.

Here you will learn the relevance of hard work, the importance of perspective, and the power of collaboration. Our deliberate choices for our community and curriculum have put Putney at the leading edge of education in America.
