    Overview

The Boston Leadership Institute is an award-winning summer program for high-achieving teens. Since 2011, BLI has provided unique, engaging, and valuable opportunities to thousands of students from around the United States and the world. Led by highly qualified and decorated teachers and professors, students gain access to challenging and exciting coursework as well as  important credentials to include on college applications.

    Our program offerings include:

    • Anatomy - BLI's one-week pre-med Anatomy course is a jam packed dive into dissections, the skeletal system, neuroscience, and more. If you're a student who prefers a hands experience, join Anatomy and spends hours in the lab every day.  Students will be taken on a journey of discovery into the marvels of the awe inspiring human body. Our work together will include hands-on lab activities, and more. Students will learn about anatomy through hands-on use of: Models, Dissection, Experimentation, Exercise.

This unit will cover heart anatomy and physiology, via examination of the heart, and a study of the impact of exercise on cardiovascular function. Students will learn the basics of CPR and will learn about heart healthy nutrition and lifestyle choices.

    • Intro to Surgery - The one-week Introduction to Surgery program will present students with basic surgical skills, such as surgical knot tying and suturing, and then allow them to translate these skills to mock surgeries.

Cardiovascular diseases and surgical procedures will be focused on this week, including coronary artery bypass grafting.  Students will additionally complete, in groups, a slideshow presentation involving cardiothoracic diseases and their surgical treatments. They will then practice their presenting skills as they present their work to the rest of the class.  This one-week summer program is designed for teens interested in pre-med.

Pre-HS Mini-Med School - Hey future doctor, get your stethoscope ready!  Mini-Med School is now in session.  In this class, we’ll dive into various areas, focusing on a few new subject areas every day.  What makes up a routine check up? How do you test a patient’s reflexes? What are you listening for in their breathing? What about the differences between pediatric physicals and adult check ups. How do you know if a child is developing properly?

After this, we’ll move on to more specific specialties.  maybe you’ll even find one you want to pursue!  We’ll go from top to bottom, starting with Neuroscience.  The nervous system, spinal cord, degenerative diseases – we’ll cover it all! What is Alzheimer’s?  You’ve heard that mental health and physical health are similar, and we’ll explore how. After this, we’ll get down to the heart.  Did you know your heart beats 115,000 times and pumps 2,000 gallons per day?! But what can go wrong?  How does someone end up on the path to a heart attack?  Imagine you’re a cardiothoracic surgeon.  A patient needs a bypass.  What happens next?!

    • We’ll continue through the body, covering orthopedics, oncology, genetic diseases, and more.  This will be a fast-paced and hands-on experience.  Open to students in middle school, Mini-Med School is one of our most popular programs and sells out fast every year!

Intro to Sports Medicine -  Calling all athletes and sports fanatics! Explore what it takes to keep elite athletes in tip top shape on and off the field. Our one-week Intro to Sports Medicine program will expose students to the medical methods that help athletes improve their athletic performance as well as recover from and prevent future injuries.

Some of the topics covered in this week-long course include physical therapy, surgery, orthopedics, concussion research, and much more. Students will receive hands-on experiences learning about a variety of advanced techniques on rehabilitation and performance. This course is perfect for students passionate about medicine and sports.

    • Vetrinary Medicine - In this three-week program, students will cover veterinary surgery by performing mock surgeries and bone-settings, research common afflictions such as canine distemper and rabies. They will also explore various methods of diagnosis, including how to detect pain through physical examinations and how to analyze imaging from x-rays, MRIs, and CT scans.

*This is a competitive admissions summer research program designed for teens.
