The Psychiatry research program provides an introduction to the fascinating world of mental illness: origins, symptoms, and treatment. Students may gain understanding of the major forms of mental disorders such as: Autism, Schizophrenia, Phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Depression, Eating Disorders, and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity.

Psychiatrists have a full arsenal of methods at their disposal to treat those disorders as they (unlike psychologists) can prescribe medication. Their medical school training also affords them a fuller understanding of how bodily ailments may manifest themselves in psychiatric symptoms. Psychiatry students may learn about key classes of antidepressants and a range of other medications designed to alleviate symptoms and mental illness. They may practice administering and scoring measures of psychiatric symptoms. They may diagnose individuals using case studies and develop treatment plans.
