    Overview

Academically ready rising or graduated high school seniors are invited to apply to Brown's Summer Pre-Baccalaureate Program, a selective program designed to engage college-ready high school students in for-credit, college level learning.

Study side-by-side with Brown undergraduates and earn college credit in these seven-week courses drawn from across the Brown curriculum.

Pre-Bacc's enroll in regular Brown University Summer Session undergraduate courses, earn college credit, study side-by-side with Brown undergraduates, and experience the rigors and deep satisfactions of Ivy League learning. Course offerings span the undergraduate, first year curriculum - across the natural sciences and mathematics, the social sciences, humanities, and the fine and performing arts. All courses offered are equivalent to full semester long courses, compressed into the intense 7 week long summer schedule. Classes meet approximately 8 hours per week, and involve at least as much outside work. The compressed semester, intense pace and attention paid to each student in small classes makes the summer an ideal time for focused study and intellectual growth.

The range of courses open to Pre-Baccs include those that build upon their high school course work and take that learning to another level - and my provide advanced standing once they enroll as an undergraduate in a college or university. Other courses provide opportunities to study in areas not available in any high school, and introduce students to fields of study they may undertake as future majors. Summer students residing on campus are expected to enroll in two courses; commuting students may enroll in one. In most courses, students are evaluated by an "A," "B," "C," or "NC" (no credit) grade. In some courses, students may be evaluated on a satisfactory/no-credit basis, rather than a letter grade.

Outside of class, Pre-Bacc's have the experience of independent living on an Ivy Leage campus, spending time in Brown's libraries or other study areas, making friends, attending events and social activities on campus, and having time for summer fun. Preparing for college continues with an extensive Co-Curricular Summer@Brown activity calendar - workshops and presentations designed specifically to help students succeed with their college applications, better preparing them for the transition to college life and college-level academics.

Pre-Bacc's live in residence halls designated specifically for them within walking distance of academic buildings and campus resources. A team of carefully selected and trained Residence Directors (RDs) and Residential Advisors (RAs) live ealong with the Pre-Bacc's in each of the residence halls during the summer program. These skilled and caring live-in professionals and Brown undergraduates help students create a balanced academic and social life.
