Located in Northern California's Trinity Alps, Camp Unalayee is a non-profit, co-ed wilderness summer camp that provides meaningful outdoor experiences for children ages 10-17.
Camp Unalayee is a wilderness summer camp situated on 400 private acres in the heart of Northern California’s Trinity Alps Wilderness. At 6,400’, Camp is nestled in a beautiful, alpine lake basin, surrounded by rugged peaks and saw-tooth ridges. Campers live in small groups along our year-round creek, or by meadows in the woods near the lake.
Most campers choose the Base Camp program, which combines in-camp activities with time backpacking out on the trail.
While in base camp, campers live as a family in small but diverse groups called “tribes.” Each tribe has at least two counselors who make sure everyone shares in communal tasks like building fires, cooking, and cleaning up. Each morning, campers assemble after breakfast to learn about the activities being offered that day. Possible choices include archery, crafts, swimming, boating, arts, rock-climbing, music, and much more.
Each base-camp session also includes multi-day backpacking trips (one trip for the ten-day introductory program, two trips for the fifteen-day program). The hikes are planned to be compatible with campers’ age, interests and abilities. The three- to four-day long hikes are led by trained, experienced Unalayee staff, equipped with two-way radios and other safety gear.
Each session, Unalayee offers at least one eleven-day Trail Program that provides an extended backpacking trip into this remarkable landscape. All Trail Program hikes start at Unalayee’s base camp with itinerary planning, food packing and gearing up. They return to base camp with enough time for campers to enjoy activities, campfires and some well-earned hearty meals.
Our Counselor-in-Training (CIT) leadership program is for motivated 16 and 17 years olds who want to learn new skills and work with children. CITs train to become outdoor leaders and positive role models in a once-in-a-lifetime wilderness summer camp experience.
