    Overview

Columbia Engineering's Summer High School Academic Program for Engineers (SHAPE) is a selective pre-college program for rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, and recent high school graduates. SHAPE is geared toward students with an aptitude for STEM: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Each 3-week session offers college-level, project-based courses in engineering taught by prestigious faculty at Columbia University.

Students engage with peers and Columbia University faculty, staff, students, alumni and industry partners through interactive programming, site visits and workshops.

    Courses

Columbia Engineering's SHAPE features hands-on, creative problem-solving pedagogy and exposes students to cutting-edge innovative engineering techniques and knowledge on Columbia University's Morningside campus. Students gain access to our renowned MakerSpace and state-of-the-art research laboratories.

    SHAPE offers exciting courses in:

    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Chemical Engineering
    • Computer Science and AI
    • Data Science and Analytics
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Robotics
    • Sustainability and Environmental Engineering

SHAPE consists of two 3-week sessions (students may choose to attend one or both sessions).

SHAPE also provides high school students workshops to explore career fields, professional development, and guidance on sharpening one’s college application from admissions officers.  Students in the program will be visiting companies and organizations that showcase the classroom content in practice.  Students are coached and taught to present in a group setting.

Upon successful completion of SHAPE, students will receive a Certificate of Completion and a personalized letter of recommendation from their professor.

    Application

Driven by our core mission, Engineering for Humanity, we believe that true innovation is only possible when the field of engineering draws on the talents, perspectives, creativity and intellectual richness of a diverse community. SHAPE encourages applications from under-represented minorities, first generation, low income, and female-identifying students.

Students are selected based on the following criteria:

    1. Strong academic record (transcript)
    2. Demonstrate excitement and interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through engagement in challenging courses, activities, projects, etc. (resume and responses to essay questions)
    3. Enthusiastic letter of recommendation from teachers, counselors and/or community members

SHAPE is dedicated to supporting students and their families in need of financial assistance. We offer a limited number of need-based scholarships, which cover the full cost of SHAPE.  To be considered for a need-based scholarship, families will need to provide a recent pay stub and complete a Family Income and Expense Worksheet. If not filing a tax return they may submit a Parent Tax Non-Filer Form.
