    Overview

The Armstrong Scholars Program seeks to inspire all young women, ages 15-18 to reach their highest potential, develop a stronger sense of self and explore their personal connection to nature during a 12-day wilderness backpacking adventure in Yosemite’s High Sierra.

This program, inspired by and in memory of former NatureBridge educator Joie Armstrong, recognizes there are many ways to identify as a woman and welcomes all of those ways in this program which brings together individuals from different cultural, ethnic, racial, religious, LGBTQIA+, and socioeconomic communities.

    Testimonials(6)

    • Where to begin? The friendships, the life skills, the education to protect our parks and that their field work contributes a little to the work of other scientists... it's beyond expectation.

      - Debby L. - July 13, 2019
    • I call it the best opportunity of my life so far... This trip showed me all the things we neglect in daily life.

      - Hana - September 6, 2018
    • I feel that this experience has really opened me to a different way of science. It's no longer just in the labs, and I've grown ever eager to learn about the many amazing environments. It's also taught me a lot about people, and I've developed better people skills from this trip.

      - Ben - July 28, 2018
    • The Summer Backpacking program will be an experience you will never forget, it will change how you view everything, even your hometown and push you to experience more backpacking and getting outside.

      - Isabella - August 3, 2018
    • This experience gave me an incredible sense of bravery to be the person that I want to be and that I know I am.

      - Marisa - August 28, 2017
    • My name is Makenna, and I'm from Burlingame, California. My favorite part of the program was how everyone will accept you no matter what you look like or how disheveled you are. You don't have to worry about people liking you or technology, just being in the moment and experiencing it all... Everyone is able to integrate into this program and we all come from different backgrounds and areas and work as a team backpacking and doing science. I really respected how this program allowed us to work as young adults and not being spoon fed everything, we all learned and learned from each other... I would say throw away all your expectations because it is not something you can prepare for and explain. It is way more about the experience and living it... be it challenges you can overcome, staff, friendships, scenery- this trip has it all!
