YEA was started in 2001 with 40 student participants at SDSM&T. Students participate in hands-on projects in engineering, science, and technology while living on campus and sampling college life. The camp is held every June.
Goals & Opportunities
The goal of YEA is to build understanding, appreciation, interest, and enthusiasm for engineering as a career among high school students. Inspiring young people in this manner will help ensure that future generations have individuals empowered with knowledge of engineering and technology to generate greater economic vitality and create a better quality of life.
YEA provides the following opportunities:
- Hands-on learning and educational experiences
- Engineering design experiences
- Tours: Engineering/Industry/Technology Leaders
- Teamwork and Leadership Opportunities
- Introduction to Engineering as a Career
- Social Interactions and Fun
YEA is a co-ed program that includes a variety of educational and social activities. One of the important aspects of YEA will be to allow participants to meet and make new friends. Students will be divided into approximately ten-member groups. Each student group will work closely with an engineer. Activities will include speakers, panel discussions, engineering design projects, tours, demonstrations, hands-on projects, group learning experiences, and social functions.
Students selected to attend YEA will be required to submit a $100 non-refundable registration fee. Participant expenses for food, lodging, materials, and activities will be paid for by YEA. Participants will be responsible for travel expenses to and from YEA.
