    Overview

Designed for students entering grades 8 and 9, this workshop immerses students in the fundamentals of algebraic concepts, from a review of pre-algebra foundations to the more advanced problem-solving skills at the heart of algebra. Through individualized attention and practice, students will increase their confidence in their mathematical abilities and develop the critical thinking necessary to succeed in high-school level math.

At Summer@Taft, we believe strongly that students should have CHOICES. Our individualized academic program enables students to further their academic progress by choosing a course of study that suits their personal needs and interests. Summer@Taft offers dynamic faculty, a beautiful 226-acre campus, modern facilities, a 4:1 student-to-faculty ratio, and an average class size of 10 students.

This two-week intensive focuses on strengthening command of basic mathematical understandings as well as setting a strong foundation for algebraic concepts. The course will reinforce students’ number sense by specifically reviewing numerical techniques, arithmetic, and number systems. Students should possess the ability to process those pre-algebra concepts, but the course seeks to reinforce those rudimentary skills before moving into algebraic concepts.

As the session shifts, the course examines linear equations and word problems, which provide the heart of algebra. Students will solve quadratic equations both by factoring and formula. Constant repetition and practice will strengthen their problem-solving skills. The instructor will stress critical thinking rather than rote memorization, which will prepare students for future mathematical courses.

Both students who are beginning algebra and those who need additional training will benefit from the intensity of the course. Students will leave the program with more confidence in their mathematical abilities and problem-solving skills. Outside the classroom, students take part in daily athletics as well as on- and off-campus trips and activities. We invite you to visit our website for more information.
