    Overview

Sci|Art Lab + Studio was established in 2007 with the goal to immerse high school students in both sciences and the arts -- bridging two cultures and building the future “third culture”. From the very beginning this program has inserted Arts into Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, we believe that STEAM is a much more exciting way to encourage creative thinking leading to innovation. The course is 4 undergraduate UC credits that are transferable. Find out more!

“The further art advances the closer it approaches science, the further science advances the closer it approaches art.” ? Buckminster Fuller.

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” ? Albert Einstein.

We ask students to IMAGINE THE IMPOSSIBLE! to address challenges from a more holistic view and conceive of new ways of dealing with complexity in order to facilitate applications for innovation and creation in our contemporary society.

Sponsored by UCLA's Art|Sci Center, the Department of Design Media Arts (DMA) at UCLA and the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) this program brings together world renowned scientists, artists, professionals and instructors to provide a nourishing, yet challenging environment. The program is led and designed by Professor Victoria Vesna (Design Media Arts) and Professor James Gimzewski (Distinguished Professor, Chemistry) along with the Art Sci collective -- a dedicated group of experienced instructors who have been teaching in the program for years.

Course material will cover historical retrospective, surveys of current art and science collaborations, biohacking and at-home labs, bio art and design, VR (virtual reality) and AR Augmented Reality), coding, processing and digital animation. Every day, live instruction, tutoring and group work will be in the exciting program.

Lab and museum visits and other supplementary material will be offered. Through this diverse material, students will be exposed to the interface of science and art culture with a focus on multi-disciplinary collaborations. In order to maintain intimate learning, students will be placed in groups with instructors and receive close attention allowing for connection and participation with one another. Students will work on a collaborative final project for the course, following a graduation ceremony at the end of the course.
