Have you ever wondered what mathematicians actually do, or how math is used to explore and understand the world around us? In this two-week pre-college course high school students will dive into fascinating questions, creative games, and hands-on projects to explore how mathematics helps us think, solve problems, and see the world in new ways. With just basic arithmetic skills and a lot of curiosity, students will discover the excitement of mathematical thinking, from understanding shapes to counting infinite objects, and applying data to real-life scenarios.

This course welcomes all students, from math enthusiasts to those simply curious about what math can offer beyond the classroom!

    Course Structure and Day-to-Day Activities:

    • The class will run for two weeks with daily sessions, each featuring interactive activities and group discussions.
    • Each session will begin with a short introduction to the day’s theme, followed by engaging, collaborative math games and activities designed to introduce abstract and college-level mathematical ideas in a fun, accessible way.
    • Topics might include infinity, set theory, probability, topology, graph theory, group theory and logic puzzles, linking back to real-world applications and modern mathematical ideas.

    Projects and Final Presentation:

During the course, students will work on a small project of their choice, in groups, exploring a mathematical topic or question. In the final class, each group will present their project to the class, sharing their findings and reflections on what they’ve learned. These presentations will help students practice their communication skills and show the creativity involved in mathematical exploration.

    Materials Needed:

    • Notebook and pens: For taking notes and working out problems by hand.
    • Curiosity and open-mindedness: A willingness to try new things and think outside the box.
