    Hospitality and tourism management (HTM) is the largest industry in the world, employing 10% of the global workforce and accounting for 10% of the global GDP. We embrace traditional sectors such as hotels, foodservice, clubs, events, theme parks, and tourism.  But we also represent the business of hospitality, which is in every business and customer interaction including business leadership, customer experience management, customer relationships, information technology, and global cultures. We invite you to experience the most dynamic industry which encompasses an eye-opening array of careers, hosted by one of the premier Hospitality & Tourism undergraduate programs in the top-ranked Isenberg School of Management, at UMass Amherst.

    The Hospitality & Tourism Management Leadership Academy provides a platform for talented and driven high school students to learn core business foundations and experience all of the amazing opportunities behind the business of hospitality. In this program you will learn from award-winning teachers, industry leaders, and participate a wide variety of experiential learning opportunities. Our goal is to have you learn in and outside of the classroom.

    The HTM Leadership Academy challenges students to apply a multi-faceted management approach to strategic leadership in HTM, offering diverse and highly interactive methods to learning. During this two-week program, students immerse themselves in key segments and critical issues relevant to the highly competitive Hospitality & Tourism industry, such as:

    • •Hotel and Resort Management
    • Global Perspectives, Culture, and Trends in Food and Beverage Management  Sustainable Tourism
    •  Event and Entertainment Management
    •  Customer Experience and Customer Relationship Management
    • Employee and Customer Wellness
    •  Information Technology and Social Media in HTM
    •  Leadership Management
    •  Hospitality Business Innovation

    Students will be exposed to and examine the vast areas and topics of the HTM industry, which they will learn encompasses much greater avenues and opportunities than simply hotels and restaurants. Since the industry of hospitality and tourism is an applied business field, many of the courses will have an experiential element combined with the conceptual material taught by faculty members and industry professionals to truly immerse in their educational experience during their summer program.

    Some of the experiential elements of courses taught will include:

    • Culinary Sessions at the Marriott Center for Hospitality Management 
    • Etiquette Dining Learning Experience 
    • Field Trips to UMass Permaculture and Sustainable Agricultural Farms
    • Field Trips to local and metropolitan Hotels, Resorts, Restaurants, Clubs, and Event spaces
    •  Industry guest speakers 

    Students who attend this program will:

    • Acquire a macro-level understanding of the expansive hospitality business & tourism industries.
    • Conceptualize, analyze, and identify the unique consumer and employee response in customer service using advanced technology.
    • Conceptualize and analyze the unique market/business dynamics of sustainable tourism and luxury brand management.
    • Gain valuable access to Isenberg/HTM’s unparalleled alumni network, including on-site visits to hotels, resorts, restaurants.
    • Complete a professional team-based presentation on one area of interest from the 2-week program.

    This course is offered at the UMass Amherst campus as a residential program. Local students may apply to attend as a commuter.
