Have you wondered about what you might want to do after high school? This program will provide students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and/or 504 plans the opportunity to experience college, learn skills necessary to successfully transition to college, and develop career readiness skills. Students will learn the purpose of IEPs and 504 plans, the difference between modifications and accommodations, the importance of notetaking, and development of study skills.
The program will also focus on the differences between high school and college with regard to modifications and accommodations in special education. A residential component is available for students who are considering living away from home.
The objective of the course is to help students define a personal list of strengths and weaknesses and link them to meaningful academic coursework that will lead to careers that leverage strong personal and professional skills and attributes. The course will focus on identifying potentially satisfying work that allows students to be competitive in the job market and enjoy a full and independent life.
The course includes:
-Effective and efficient study skills and note taking
-Time management through prioritization of tasks
-Communication skills, conflict resolution techniques, self-advocacy skills
-Learning the differences between high school and college with regard to modifications and accommodations in special education
-Career interest inventory
Lunch Time: During lunch, students have the opportunity to interact with their peers, which helps them build social skills and independence. The cost of meals is included for all students.
Effective Communication through Writing:
This course emphasizes the writing process and concentrates on the organization and development of ideas in written form, such as correct language usage, e-mail etiquette, communication skills, and writing styles within an academic setting. Particular attention is given to writing techniques that will enable the student to communicate successfully in various tasks.
High school juniors through recent high school graduates (entering grades 11 or 12, as well as recent high school graduates) with IEP or 504. This program is open enrollment based on fit and availability.
