Project Chicken Soup is a non-profit organization that prepares and delivers free, nutritious, kosher meals to people in the greater Los Angeles area living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses.
PCS was founded in 1989, when a small group of concerned volunteers formed a group called Nechama (comfort) to prepare food baskets in a small synagogue kitchen and deliver them to people living with HIV/AIDS. By the early 1990?s, the organization, now called Project Chicken Soup, was subletting space in a commercial kitchen to provide freshly prepared, kosher meals to approximately 110 clients. From 15 volunteers in a Hollywood synagogue kitchen, PCS has grown into a cadre of 1,500 kitchen and delivery volunteers, who gather twice each month throughout the year in our own leased commercial kitchen, to prepare and deliver nutritious, kosher meals to 125 clients. Our volunteers include students fulfilling community service requirements, volunteer groups from the faith based community, corporate world and academic institutions, and individuals and small family groups with age ranges from 2 - 92! Many of our volunteers have been with PCS for over 20 years. In 2011, the PCS Board of Directors approved a mission expansion that broadened the target population for services to include people with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses that prevent them from either preparing or obtaining their own meals.
