Enrolling students must have a high level of English language proficiency. Credit transfers are accepted under certain guidelines.
Within the Liberal Arts school at ACD, students may choose from a course of study in Creative Writing (BFA), Liberal Arts (BA), Performing Arts (BFA), English Preparation, and Creative Writing (MFA).
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing: The BFA program in Creative Writing encompasses a wide range of approaches, including prose fiction, poetry, drama, screenwriting, graphic novels, video games, and writing for new media (blogs, social media, etc.). It provides a range of opportunities for artistic and intellectual growth, enhanced expressive ability, and a rich variety of career developmental possibilities in the arts and business. The BFA program examines all of the main areas of creative writing, and as the student progresses, the program makes increasing use of the workshop method of teaching. In the final stages there are opportunities for approved students to undertake extended independent writing projects.
Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts: The BA (Hons) in Liberal Arts provides an intellectually stimulating and challenging course of undergraduate study. The program is structured around two common years, with specializations developing out of the common curriculum in the third year of study. In the third year students are required to major in one of four concentrations: Irish Studies, American Studies, History, or English. The degree is particularly useful as preparation for postgraduate study in the liberal arts, business studies, and the law. The degree supports career development in such fields as business, social services, the arts, administration, teaching, and research.
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performing Arts: This BFA degree offers a holistic approach to the performing arts, one that concentrates on both performance from a participatory perspective and preparing the student for the range of careers available in the performing arts industry. The program is centered around live theatrical performance (with elements of recording used for diagnostic and development purposes), but at the same time a graduate is prepared for further study in all cognate specialisms in the performing arts, as well as for direct entry into a professional career.
English Preparation Program: The English Preparation Program is a 30-credit, two-semester program, which provides a bridge/transition program for students whose English language skills require development before the commencement of full-time college education. The program includes extended courses on the development of English language skills for college-level academic purposes, academic communication, information technology, study skills, time management, critical thinking, and writing.
Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing: The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing offers aspiring or published writers a one-year course of study which examines the process and practice of producing prose fiction. Within a critical workshop and mentoring format students are provided with tuition and advice in completing either a novel or a short story collection. A graduate of the program will be in a position to consider submission of a complete and polished work to a literary agent or publisher. He or she will also be prepared for participation in a range of complementary fields, such as journalism, publishing, editing, online writing, advertising, marketing, and research.
