The Mission of Friends Meeting School is to provide a dynamic educational experience that emphasizes excellence of mind, body, and spirit, within a diverse caring community and in the context of Quaker values, so students may realize their full talent and potential.
At Friends Meeting School we nurture the mind, body, and spirit of every student. There are many facets to life at FMS. Rigorous academics are woven together with physical activity, performing and visual arts, community service, and ethical and spiritual development. Our school community is comprised of learners of all ages including students, staff, parents, and neighbors. We share our experience with each other and respect the perspectives of each other in the pursuit of truth and excellence. Our goal is to cultivate the whole student so they are prepared to be engaged, active citizens in their communities and the larger world.
We are a high school where the multiple intelligences that students bring are honored. Many schools use a lecture based learning pedagogy, but sitting in class after class for 50 minute periods listening to lectures works for only a very small population of learners. Our program of integrated, project-based learning requires a multitude of skills and creativity that makes for an exciting and meaningful educational experience. Classes in Ethics, International Relations, and Human Behavior, as well as United Nations simulations lead to spirited debate and provide learning opportunities across skill sets. Given our educational style and small classes it is simply not possible for students to be disengaged in their learning.
FMS's curriculum is based on the following principles:
- Acceptance and Appreciation
- Global Perspective
- Stellar Science and Math
- Vibrant Humanities and Language Arts
- Thriving Performing and Visual Arts
- Internships and Service
