Houghton Academy is a Christian, college-prep boarding and day school enrolling students in grades 6 - 12. We describe our program as having a three-fold emphasis on head, heart and hands. We seek to supply core knowledge and allow knowledge to be informed by faith.
Houghton Academy prepares its graduates to become people of integrity and Christian character, striving to equip them for success in the colleges and careers of their choice. Graduation requirements include four credits each of English and social studies, three credits each of math and science, five elective credits, one credit of fine arts, and one-half credit of health. Credit in Bible and in physical education is required for each year of attendance. Elective subjects include accounting, biology, chemistry, physics, advanced math, computer applications, desktop publishing, Spanish, art, choir, band, and speech. Advanced students may take courses at Houghton College for both high school and college credit.
Houghton Academy seeks not only to transfer knowledge and skills, we seek to supply knowledge and skills that are informed, directed and constrained by Truth. Knowledge for its own sake is empty. To be fully educated is to understand and embrace a higher purpose in life, a purpose that is clearly defined by Gods Word.
When all is said and done, students should not learn merely for the sake of learning. Education should, inevitably, result in action. A phrase in our mission statement reflects this commitment by stating that the Academy purposes to "teach our students a life of service." Our experience suggests that this is an increasingly counter-cultural message. We seek to help our students recognize that day-to-day living offers many opportunities to serve and assist others. From the simple act of picking up a piece of paper off the floor to the intense moments spent volunteering in a nursing home, we strive to teach and model a lifestyle that is enthusiastically others-centered.
