    Overview

Newark Academy is an independent day school in New Jersey for students in grades 6-12. It's mission is as follows, "Newark Academy will contribute to the world engaged individuals instilled with a passion for learning, a standard of excellence, and a generosity of spirit."

We are changing the way secondary schools educate young people. Newark Academys Upper School (grades 9-12) has long been in the forefront in augmenting the traditional college preparatory program with a global focus that brings the world to our students and them to the world.

The program is intellectual and cohesive, emphasizing depth of understanding over simple content mastery. Our students embrace the challenges and opportunities that come with a focus on the skills of collaboration, innovation and communication. Even our methods of assessmentwhich reward commitment to pure academic inquiry, intellectual sparring, and continued growthspeak to our belief that young people today require a rigorous, experiential education that inspires and empowers them.

Another aspect of the Upper School that sets Newark Academy apart is the sense of humor and play. Community meetings feature humorous announcements, dancers, musicians and cultural quiz bowls. Spirit Week decorations, contests, and grade-level skits are legendary. Rigor with balance. Joy in striving. College and life preparation with an immersion orientation. This is the Newark Academy Upper School.
