We offer exciting, rewarding outdoor adventure education for youth ages 12-18 ranging in length from 5-20 days. Teen Wilderness Adventures combine one or more outdoor activities--like hiking, rock climbing, backpacking, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, --with spectacular destinations.
Come explore the public waterways and wilderness areas of northern New Hampshire on this multi-sport conservation and climate change focused course. This course combines backpacking and canoeing to provide teens with a great opportunity to explore their own ideas about public lands, while taking part in a community of young people who are actively seeking to improve the relationship between people and the natural world. We will think about and discuss our nation's history of protecting landscapes for public use and enjoyment and how policy enhances or exacerbates diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as explore and observe the basics of climate change science.
The group will begin their time together with 8 days of backpacking. Participants will learn how to travel and move together in the backcountry while traversing the forests and mountains of the White Mountain National Forest. AMC Educators will facilitate opportunities for the group to gain skills in camp set-up, backcountry cooking, map and compass use, decision making, and leadership. This section will include an opportunity to work with staff from the AMC's Trails Department for a full day of trail work along the group's backcountry route.
The group will then head out onto one of New Hampshire's many waterways for 4 days of remote canoe camping. They will learn the practical skills it takes to move the boats through the water and navigate, continue to hone their camping skills, and have further opportunities to discuss the ways in which humans interact with nature while exploring a new ecosystem. This program will start and end at the AMC's Pinkham Notch Visitor Center.
