    Overview

Our Teen Leadership Camp sessions offer 15 - 17 year olds the chance to take on new wilderness challenges, exercise leadership on multiple levels, and practice skills vital to becoming independent backpackers and trip leaders - all while forming a truly unique and unforgettable community.

SESSION 1: The Hiking Session is the bread and butter of Teen Leadership Camp, coming directly from the model of previous years. Teens go on two trips, generally a two-day trip and a seven-day one, gaining valuable wilderness skills. As with the Fellowship Camp, teens are split up into teams responsible for bear bagging, cooking, setting up shelter and water purification. Leaders of the day are aided by counselors in learning to navigate, assert leadership and direct daily activities. Teens participating in this program are strongly recommended to have prior athletic or hiking experience and should expect to be somewhat challenged by the physically-intensive nature of the program. [Average on trail of 5-8 miles a day on mountainous terrain].

SESSION 2: The Fellowship Session follows closely to the ethos of Woolman's younger camp. Teens decide on three projects to develop throughout the two weeks, such as mockumentaries, performances, and service and art projects. Two 3-5 day trips provide an opportunity to experience wilderness in a fun way while leaving time for work on the projects both on trail and on campus. Teens are split up into teams responsible for bear bagging, cooking, setting up shelter and water purification. Leaders of the day are aided by counselors in learning to navigate, assert leadership and direct daily activities. [Average on trail of 3-8 miles a day on mountainous terrain for the wilderness trip, we will do our best to accommodate campers of all physical abilities through day trips and other means].

SESSION 3: The Hiking Intensive Session is aimed at teens strongly interested in developing wilderness skills, challenging themselves physically, and learning about the natural world. Teens go on a single ten-day backpacking trip through the challenging terrain of the Sierra Nevadas. As with the Fellowship Camp, teens are split up into teams responsible for bear bagging, cooking, setting up shelter and water purification. Leaders of the day are aided by counselors in learning to navigate, assert leadership and direct daily activities. Even more so than the Hiking Session, the Hiking Intensive Session requires a high level of prior athletic or hiking experience. By nature of the intensive hiking, this program is not for everyone. [Average on trail of 6-10 miles a day on mountainous terrain].  Applicants must be accepted into the program.  Please contact camp@woolman.org
